From a young age Risa wanted
to become two things—Wonder Woman and Nancy Drew.
With a background in private investigation, journalism, private security, and martial arts, Risa has mostly found a way to tap into that childhood dream. That is, all except the supernatural powers that Wonder Woman could use to take down the bad guys.
In Mayan Destiny: Liberate, Risa has developed fascinating characters with unusual paranormal powers that are derived from the ancient Mayans.
Why the Mayans?! Risa has been absolutely intrigued by Mayan history, culture, and astrology (Tzolkin calendar) for the last couple of years. She became so obsessed with understanding the Mayan calendar that every person she would encounter she’d discover their Mayan Sun sign. Whether it was while working as a private tutor or at a low-key barbeque, Risa would pull out her Tzolkin calculator and ask—what’s your birthdate? Through this research she learned that the Mayan calendar could give amazing glimpses into the core of a person’s character.
Excited by her discoveries, she became determined to create a YA book series for teens and adults that was based on Mayan mythology. The main characters and their paranormal powers in the Mayan Destiny series are derived from the Mayan Tzolkin calendar and real life teens she has tutored.
Through Risa’s tutoring of teens in their academic work, she learned even more from them about the complex challenges they face and the creativity and resilience they show in facing them. They are a constant source of wonder and inspiration.
Risa is so thankful for her students’ willingness to answer her questions and give their advice on this book. So incredibly helpful! Risa would also like to give her heartfelt thanks to her friends, family, and amazing editor (Pam Glauber) for their advice and support—a community of giving individuals was responsible for the completion of book one in the Mayan Destiny series.
In her free time, Risa enjoys teaching safety awareness and self-defense to young women. She also possesses a black belt in a Japanese martial art. She has an educational background in politics and international relations. Though she doesn't currently work as a private investigator, she often lends her expertise to those in need.
She writes under the pen name Risa Vinzant. As a former investigative reporter, exploring such topics as human trafficking, anti-semitism, terrorism, and other hot button social issues in her writing is a keen interest. Risa hopes that her readers enjoy the Mayan Destiny series and welcomes all comments and questions! Please contact Risa here.
